Can Men Be Affected by Yeast Infections?
Can men be affected by yeast infections? As strange as it may sound and even though it’s not as common in men as it is in women, the answer is still- yes. Yeast infections in men occur when a man has unprotected sex with a woman who has a yeast infection, The infection can affect the penile area.
If neither partner seeks treatment, then they will keep passing the infection between themselves. Symptoms of a yeast infection in men are typically the same as they are in women- they may still have the burning and itching but may not have the discharge (although it is still possible). Yeast infections in men usually take shelter in the urethra (the canal in which urine passes within the penis).
Usually symptoms are very mild, if at all noticeable, but can of course worsen. The skin, or foreskin if you are uncircumcised, will usually get really red, itching, and scaly looking. If you are uncircumcised and have a yeast infection, it may lead to the inability to pull back the foreskin at a later time.
Other cause of yeast infections among men include diabetes, AIDS, or through the use of antibiotics since this kills bacteria- good and bad and the male is left without any natural immunity or protection against infections.
Unfortunately while there are treatment options for women who have yeast infections, there is no true treatment for men with yeast infections. However there are still treatment options available and it is still highly recommended to see a doctor just to be on the safe side even if you think your symptoms are mild.
The first treatment option is over-the-counter medications or an anti-itch cream (to be used externally only). The second option is to have a doctor prescribe a medication. And third is to try home remedies which are highly effective. Home remedies for yeast infection are very budget-friendly and a lot of the time consists of items that you already have in your kitchen or pantry- such as plain yogurt, cranberry juice, apple cider vinegar, or garlic.
So while the answer is yes to the question of can men be affected by yeast infections- the good news is there are treatment options available to you. If you suspect a yeast infection or if your partner has a yeast infection, seek medical attention promptly before attempting any treatments.
