Causes and Treatment of Yeast Infection In Men

Whenever yeast infection is mentioned, most people think of vaginal yeast infections. However, yeast infection does happen in men. The infection can affect different parts of the body including the mouth, feet and penis. Penile yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted disease but it can be painful and cause extreme discomfort.

In men, as in women, yeast infections are often caused by the candida yeast organism. Common yeast infections in men are thrush, athlete’s foot and jock itch. The crotch area and in between the toes provide a warm and damp environment where candida can thrive. Men who wear jock straps usually perspire in the crotch area and this can trigger a yeast infection in men. Men’s feet also perspire a lot especially when they wear socks and sneakers. This provides an opportunity for yeast to multiply. Yeast infections are also spread through communal showers. Fortunately, these infections are easily treated with anti-fungal sprays that are readily available in pharmacies.

“Thrush” is a yeast infection of the mouth. It can affect both men and women. It is characterized by white or creamy patches on the tongue, sides of the mouth, and lips. This infection is painful and unpleasant. Adults with weakened immune systems as a result of the use of steroids or antibiotics are at risk to develop thrush. This type of yeast infection in men can be treated with Nystatin. Nystatin is a liquid anti-fungal that is swished in the mouth several times a day. Thrush can also be treated by Clotrimazole or Famvir. Both drugs are broad-spectrum oral medications against candida.

Penile yeast infections in men can be caused by prolonged use of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill good bacteria along with the bad ones. This gives the candida yeast a chance to multiply profusely. The result is a yeast infection.

Penile yeast infections seldom exhibit any symptoms, but when they do the result is awful. The most common symptoms are penile itch, irritation and soreness of the head of the penis. There can be a clumpy, white discharge. In some cases, small blisters may form on the head of the penis and a yeasty smell can be detected.

The most common drugs used to treat penile yeast infections are Diflucan (fluconazole) and Nizoral (ketaconazole). Both are broad-spectrum anti-fungal medications.

Some men have reported that they were able to successfully treat their infection with Monistat, an over-the-counter vaginal cream. Adding a few drops of white vinegar to the cream makes it work more effectively in treating yeast infection in men.
